Abstract
Erectile dysfunction is a serious global health problem, it is expected that worldwide, the prevalence by 2025 will reach 322 million cases. The pathophysiological links between erectile dysfunction and cardiovascular disease are well characterized and both processes share endothelial dysfunction as a common pathology, the two main pathophysiological explanations include: 1. atherosclerosis and the impact it generates on the nitric oxide- Cyclic Guanosine Monophosphate signaling pathway, and 2. the artery size hypothesis. In terms of diagnosis, duplex ultrasound of the penis is the gold standard study indicated whenever vascular erectile dysfunction is present. And regarding treatment, pharmacotherapy with phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors has been widely studied and their current indications are well known.
