Abstract
Streptococcus agalactiae is a Gram-positive bacteria, cocci shaped, beta-hemolytic, classifiable by serotyping or MLTS techniques into various groups, with multiple virulence factors and colonizer of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts. Which, in conditions of immunosuppression, diabetes or pregnancy, can cause invasive disease.
When a pregnant woman is colonized, vertical transfer of this agent can frequently occur, causing multiple neonatal diseases, such as: meningitis, sepsis, among others. These diseases have serious consequences that range from moderate neurological to death, where there is always an unfavorable prognosis for surviving children.
The screening, early diagnosis, intrapartum prophylaxis, and vaccination are strategies to combat the disease caused by group B streptococci.
