Abstract
Constipation is a common problem seen throughout childhood. Early interventions are vital to avoid complications and perform timely management.
Its definition is given by the criteria of Rome IV, and its management will depend on the underlying cause.
The introduction of solid foods, sphincter control training and school entry are mentioned among the main triggers for functional constipation in pediatric age.
Babies with severe or recurrent constipation, and especially those with symptoms from birth, should be carefully evaluated for possible organic causes, including Hirschsprung's disease, anorectal abnormalities and cystic fibrosis. Childhood dysquezia is a common cause of constipation-like symptoms in young babies.
