Abstract
Sleep is an important human behavior, and one of its main functions is to help in the development of cognitive processes. It is characterized by two factors: the patterns that are defined as morning, intermediate or evening and the habits that are established by everyone. Poor sleep quality and daytime sleepiness in medical students affect academic performance, physical health, and mental health. Currently there are different factors that intervene in the quality and habits of sleep such as the use of stimulants for cognitive enhancement, every day increasing the number of medical students who use these substances to improve their academic performance, among other things, which do not consider the adverse effects that overshadow the positive results of their use. Many times, the students themselves are not aware of these situations, since they are immersed in the number of academic commitments they have. Understanding the negative effects of sleep quality on academic performance is part of the path to improving and promoting good quality and good sleep habits.
