Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most frequent endocrinological disorder in women of reproductive age and is the most important cause of infertility due to chronic anovulation. Because of its multifactorial origin, its approach and management are not well defined, and so, this review aims to present evidence of new treatments available worldwide. The first line of treatment that has been historically used is lifestyle modification. Combined oral contraceptives (ACOS) are the first-line pharmacological treatment and are used for long-term management of the pathology. Insulin sensitizers are a useful alternative in the management of insulin resistance, and they are an ideal option to add secondarily to any first-line treatment. Increasing scientific evidence provides prescribers with new alternative tools such as supplements, new drugs, probiotics, and surgical interventions to address this condition in a multifactorial manner. Finally, it is concluded that the strategies discussed can be used alone or together, and the importance of individualizing each patient's approach with the most appropriate available alternatives is highlighted.
