Abstract

The electrocardiogram (ECG) allows to document the electrical activity of the heart. It is an extremely useful tool that works to complement the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases, control of treatment in case of using of cardiotoxic drugs, hydroelectrolyte alterations, etc. Consists of twelve leads that are recorded on a graph paper that must be with the appropriate speed and amplitude to prevent errors in the interpretation. It is recommended to have a systematic order for read the ECG, in that way details will not be overlooked. Prior to confirming that is the correct study from the specific patient, the heart rhythm, rate and the electrical axis had been verified; the paper should be read from left to right to value the P wave, the PR interval, the QRS complex, the ST segment and the T wave. Furthermore, it must be remembered that in athletes there are expected changes that remain within the characteristics of a normal ECG such as frequency and other structural changes.
