Abstract
Sphingomonas paucimobilis is an opportunistic gram-negative bacterium found in the environment and on surfaces that has been isolated from nosocomial infections, mainly in immunosuppressed or chronically ill patients. The reported cases are associated with contamination in intravenous media or solutions and devices for medical use such as catheters. The symptoms are related with the condition that is presented and its treatment in antibiotics such as third generation cephalosporins. In general, this bacterium presents low virulence and usually resolves the symptoms spontaneously, which causes these cases to go unnoticed. This case report is based on a male patient from Los Chiles Costa Rica with secondary catheter peritonitis due to Sphingomonas paucimobilis who suffers from chronic kidney disease.
