Abstract

Meconium Aspiration Syndrome (MAS) is an entity characterized by respiratory distress that occurs in patients born through meconium-stained amniotic fluid, whose symptoms cannot be explained in any other way. MAS can present with varying degrees of severity, from a mild condition to life-threatening with respiratory failure. Its pathophysiology involves intrauterine or postnatal passage or aspiration of meconium with subsequent lung disease resulting in hypoxemia, acidosis, and potentially pulmonary arterial hypertension. MAS is differentiated from other causes of neonatal respiratory distress based on patient history, medical history, physical examination, and radiographic findings.
