Abstract
The evolution of the definition of the metabolic syndrome has been presented to the international scientific community, and the key factors to identify this syndrome with a high prevalence and incidence and risks for cardiovascular disease. The first references date back to the 1920s when scientists Hitzenberger and Richter report on the interdependence between metabolism and hypertension and the last presence of diabetes Mellitus.1, 2 Subsequently, a series of investigations and epidemiological studies will be published, however, in order to define the syndrome and establish clear guidelines for diagnosis. This has led to the emergence of several definitions, including the world health organization, which in 1999 common insulin is the common cause of the individual components of the syndrome.
