Abstract
Open ankle arthrodesis is the most appropriate surgical approach for patients who suffer from symptomatic ankle osteoarthritis or have suffered tibiotalar trauma that causes pain, negatively impacting quality of life, and who do not achieve adequate recovery through conservative treatment.
The literature on this technique is scarce, so it would be of great importance to have updated information on possible postoperative complications that patients who underwent open ankle arthrodesis may experience, as well as their potential recovery. In this context, the aim of the present study is to explore relevant aspects regarding the performance of this approach, patient recovery and possible postoperative complications.
Articles published in the last 10 years in both Spanish and English were reviewed, using the keywords open ankle arthrodesis, patient recovery, post-surgery complications and the Spanish equivalents artrodesis abierta tobillo, recuperación de pacientes, complicaciones poscirugía, using the databases SciELO, EBSCO, BINASS and the search engines Google academic and PubMed.
The search focused on open ankle arthrodesis, postoperative recovery and possible complications, excluding articles published more than 10 years ago, articles related to midfoot or forefoot arthrodesis, as well as studies on arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis.
The information gathered will provide a solid basis for providing informed and up-to-date treatment, helping to improve the quality of care and provide strong support for clinical decision making related to this procedure.
