Abstract
The high availability and powerful analgesic effect has made opioid medications an excellent alternative for the treatment of moderate and severe pain. However, its powerful addictive potential makes it a double-edged sword; They do a lot of good, on the one hand, but, on the other hand, patients easily become hooked on addictive or dependent behavior, which, most of the time, ruins the medical treatment of the underlying condition, in addition to complications in all cases. the areas of the subject's life. The present case, of a patient with sickle cell disease and a deep ulcer in the lower limbs, who developed, without realizing it, and with the support of the entire family, an addiction to codeine, is a clear example of the therapeutic complexity of a physical condition. chronic and opioid consumption. As well as, the involuntary development of addiction, exacerbated complications in the underlying condition and personal and family chaos. However, the relevance of specialized treatment for codeine addiction is evident.
