Abstract
In the educational context of the Dominican Republic, the level of physical activity of the students is not the most recommended, since they do not reach an optimal level of physical activity and an exceptional degree of their physical condition. Therefore, it is notable to analyze the practice of physical activity and its relationship with overweight and obesity in students of a public secondary institution in the Dominican Republic. The quantitative approach was used, it is part of the non-experimental design. 540 students from said institution were included as participants, through probabilistic sampling in which a sample of 225 was chosen using the Fisher and Navarro equation. The Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and a physical fitness test were applied. The data do not follow a normal distribution, since the p-value is ˂a 0.05, therefore, from this the non-parametric Spearman Rho test is used. In the data from the physical activity variable, the result was an average of 2.52, a median of 2.0, the standard deviation of 0.79 and the standard error of the mean of 0.05. 14.23% are underweight, 56% are normal weight, 18.7% are overweight and 11.1% are obese. Conclusions: the students have a low level of physical activity, the majority are thin, overweight and obese.
