Abstract

Laryngeal papillomatosis is a disease caused by the Human Papillomavirus, mainly HPV-6 and HPV-11 subtypes, in which benign tumors develop in the respiratory tract. Although HPV is classified as a sexually transmitted virus, laryngeal papillomatosis is not necessarily contracted this way, as it can be transmitted through multiples routes. This disease has no definitive cure and every diagnosed patient must undergo regular monitoring to prevent possible dissemination, malignant transformation and life-threatening complications. The objective of this review is to gather the most recent and relevant information about the pathology of interest, in order to assist any medical professional interested in obtaining an accurate and early diagnosis that will improve the treatment, quality of life, and mortality of the patient.
