Asociación entre los antecedentes de violencia interparental y el sobrepeso y obesidad en mujeres peruanas en edad reproductiva: hallazgos de una encuesta nacional durante el 2023

Abstract

Introduction: Evidence linking emotionally adverse events, such as interparental violence, with overweight and obesity remains limited. Therefore, the objective was to determine the association between interparental violence and overweight/obesity in women of reproductive age.

Materials and Methods: Data from the 2023 Peruvian Demographic and Health Survey (ENDES) were used. A total of 11,843 women of reproductive age were eligible for the study. Interparental violence was defined as the father of the surveyed woman hitting her mother. Multivariate analysis was conducted using generalized linear models.

Results: The prevalence of interparental violence in the sample was 37.4% (35.78% – 39.03%). Additionally, 67.23% of the women were overweight or obese. In the adjusted model, women who reported this type of violence had a 13% higher probability of being overweight or obese.

Conclusions: Our results show that 4 out of 10 women reported interparental violence in Peru during 2023. Moreover, women who experienced this type of violence were more likely to be overweight or obese compared to those who did not report violence between their parents.
