Abstract
This project was framed in the teaching social extension, which is one of the four components defined for the University Extension of the University of Medical Sciences (UCIMED). This was led by a Physiotherapy teacher and was carried out, from January to December 2024, with a group of 15 older adults who attended weekly the pastoral care for older adults of the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús Church, in Hatillo Centro, province of San José, Costa Rica.
The main objective of this intervention was to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of the participants, through a health care and promotion program, specifically through physical exercise and educational activities.
In order to confirm the physical condition of the elderly people who made up this group and the impact of the project, evaluations were carried out using the following scales: Barthel Index (BI) and Senior Fitness Test (SFT). Additionally, satisfaction surveys were carried out at the end of the project.
The results obtained showed an improvement in the physical condition of the participants. Likewise, they maintained a high level of functional independence and expressed high satisfaction with the intervention carried out since they perceived improvements in the performance of daily activities and in their general physical condition, according to the surveys applied.
