Abstract
The concept of the Mediterranean diet became popular after the study carried out by Angel Keys between 1958-64, where he compared the eating habits of seven countries: Japan, Finland, Holland, Yugoslavia, Italy, Greece and the United States. The study was able to conclude that there was a lower mortality due to cardiovascular disease, with a higher life expectancy in the Mediterranean countries, especially Greece.
