Abstract
El hospital inicia labores durante una emergencia nacional, atendiendo a los soldados costarricenses y filibusteros heridos en el frente norte y a los enfermos del cólera, enfermedad traída por las tropas al Valle Central y que mata a diez mil costarricenses. El Dr. Carlos Hoffman, cirujano mayor del ejército fue el encargado del hospital. Durante este periodo de inicio y consolidación del nosocomio, la figura del Dr. Carlos Durán llegado de Inglaterra en 1875 es la más destacable. Así podríamos afirmar que la medicina costarricense nace en el Hospital San Juan de Dios.
